Microsoft partners with Dropbox for online file-sharing

Dropbox is a file hosting service operated by Dropbox, Inc., headquartered in San Francisco, California, that offers cloud storage, file synchronization, personal cloud, and client software. Dropbox allows users to create a special folder on their computers, which Dropbox then synchronizes so that it appears to be the same folder (with the same contents) regardless of which computer is used to view it. Files placed in this folder are accessible via the folder, or through the DropBox website and a mobile app.

Microsoft already has a file-sharing service called OneDrive, but partnering with Dropbox will allow it to tap more than 200 million users of the Silicon Valley startup's services.

Dropbox and Microsoft form surprise partnership for Office integration. Microsoft Corp announced it teamed up with online file-sharing company Dropbox Inc to allow Office software users to manage and share files through Dropbox's website and mobile app. The surprise partnership will benefit Dropbox users who use Office across desktop, mobile, and the web as Microsoft’s productivity suite will soon become the standard way to edit Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files stored on Dropbox storage. Office for iPad will benefit the most, with an update coming in the following weeks that will allow Dropbox users to link their account directly to the Word, Excel, and PowerPoint iPad apps.

Microsoft and Dropbox jointly announced they are making it easy for users of Office to use Dropbox for file storage and users of Dropbox to use Office apps. Starting early in 2015, each company’s web interface will support the other’s for editing, sharing, etc.

These new features will be rolling out to all Dropbox users on iOS and Android in the next few weeks. Next year we’ll be extending these features to the web by adding integrations between the Dropbox website and Office Online. We’ll also be releasing a Dropbox app for Windows Phone and Windows tablet users in the coming months.
